Helping to control the feral cat population

FAQ

Q: What cats are considered feral?

A: Any domesticated cat that was formerly owned or has been abandoned and is no longer socialized, or any animal born outdoors that has not been socialized.

Q: Can citizens establish feral cat colonies?

A: Yes, any person intentionally providing food, water or other forms of sustenance to a feral cat or colony must apply to Animal Control for registration of such colony and this must be done annually. Registration of a colony shall consist of providing documentation of support by surrounding neighbors of the colony and assuring responsibility for feeding and providing emergency vet care to the colony members as needed. Also regular trapping must be done by the registrant or other interested party in order to sterilize all cats of the colony, to have a licensed veterinarian tip the ears for identification purposes, and to vaccinate for rabies.

Q: What if I have a problem with feral cats in my area and I do not wish to establish a colony?

A: Call Hampton Animal Control and we will gather information from you and set out humane traps or provide humane traps for your use as well as service them daily until your problem is remedied.
