Internship Opportunities

Administrative Assistant and Secretarial Internships: These internships are open to students seeking a degree or certificate that would lead to Administrative Assistant or Secretarial positions. Depending on the level of skill and interest of the student, interns in these positions may:

  • Assist/perform the basic office management responsibilities of an Administrative Assistant or Secretary
  • Assist/perform office management functions including file management, supply requisition, equipment inventory and maintenance
  • Assist/ arrange meetings and follow-up
  • Learn the importance of interpersonal relationships in the position
  • Assist/perform basic data entry applications
  • Learn/practice organizational skills needed to manage offices with many staff and customers " Learn/practice multitasking
  • Assist/perform spreadsheet capabilities used for data management, including budget management
  • Assist/perform Access applications for management
  • Learn the dynamics of City Government practices, including developing City Council resolutions
  • Assist/perform basics of grants management

Community Corrections Division Internship:This internship is open to undergraduate and graduate students interested in public safety, criminal justice, sociology, social work, psychology, education, counseling, or similar areas. Working in one of the Community Corrections offices, individuals in this internship will:

  • Assist/meet with clients. Make appointment reminder calls to clients.
  • Assist/make appropriate service referrals.
  • Assist/develop court progress reports.
  • Assist/do other functions associated with supervision, including drug testing and follow up work.
  • Assist/develop community service worksites and projects.
  • Work with other agencies and organizations regarding special client issues.
  • Enter data in a case management database.
  • Observe evaluation and placement processes.
  • A Community Corrections Division Internship specializing in Community Service is available. Under this internship, the individual will develop and supervise special community service work projects and assist in working with other established sites and projects.
  • A Community Corrections Division Internship specializing in Substance Abuse, Anger Management, and/or Batterer's Intervention Education and Treatment is available on a limited basis. Under this internship, the individual will work with staff conducting evaluations and assessments, developing treatment options, performing quality assurance checks on providers, and co-facilitating various groups.

Data Management & Evaluation Internship:This internship is open to undergraduate and graduate students interested in public administration, criminal justice, public safety, sociology, social work, psychology, mathematics, or other area. Working directly with the CJA's Data Management & Evaluation Analyst, individuals in this Hampton-based internship will be able to follow one of two paths:

  1. Self-directed research and evaluation (as typically required for graduate or special course work).
  2. CJA directed work.
  • In a self-directed research and evaluation internship, the individual conducts a research and/or evaluation project related to their course of study. See Research Opportunities for more information.
  • In a CJA directed work internship, the individual will have the opportunity to:
  • Assist in data collection and analysis
  • Work on projects of Agency, local, or state importance
  • Assist in grants research and development
  • Work with the Hampton-Newport News Community Criminal Justice Board
  • Make presentations to CJA staff or other individuals (depending on work involved in)
  • Attend various administrative meetings
  • Work with the CJA Director on special projects

Pretrial Services Division Internship:This internship is open to undergraduate and graduate students interested in public safety, criminal justice, sociology, social work, psychology, or similar areas.

Working in one of the Pretrial Services offices, individuals in this internship will:

  • Focus on Investigation, Case Management, or both
  • In an Investigation focused internship, the individual will:
  • Assist/conduct pretrial investigations, including jail interviews
  • Assist/conduct criminal history checks
  • Assist/develop court reports
  • Attend court with staff for case presentation
  • Complete follow-up requirements
  • Enter data in a case management database
  • In a Case Management focused internship, the individual will:
  • Assist/meet with clients
  • Make court reminder calls to clients
  • Assist/make appropriate service referrals
  • Assist/develop court progress reports
  • Assist/do other functions associated with supervision, including drug testing and follow up work
  • Work with other agencies and organizations regarding special client issues
  • In an internship that includes both Investigation and Case Management, the Intern will perform all functions listed for each area

Rotating Internship:
A Rotating Internship is a great opportunity for interns who only have a small number of hours to complete (less than 30). In this internship, individuals will spend time in each of the above areas shadowing staff. Interns will be able to ask questions and be exposed to a broad spectrum of experiences and information.
