About the Council
The Hampton City Council is composed of seven members, including an elected Mayor, and a Vice Mayor. The Vice Mayor is selected by Council after each election. The Council also appoints a City Manager. Elections are held on the first Tuesday in May. Council members are elected by the citizens of Hampton to four-year terms in staggered elections in even years.

Council Responsibilities
The Council is the policy-making body of the City and is vested with all the rights and powers conferred on councils in Virginia cities.
The Council appoints the City Manager, who is the chief administrator and executive officer of the City.
