SYNOPSIS:

  • The National Weather Service - Wakefield issued a tornado warning at 1:11 P.M. on Saturday, September 4, 1999.
  • At approximately 1:13 P.M., the Hampton Communications Center started receiving calls about a tornado being sighted in the Marcella Road area.
  • The National Weather Service - Wakefield estimates that the tornado may have achieved F2 strength, based upon damage reports.
  • The primary destruction was centered in an area bounded by Marcella Road, Coliseum Drive, Executive Drive and Hardy Cash Road apartment complexes (Avalon, Bridgewater, Signature Place, Township and Wyndham), an assisted living facility (The Devonshire) and a nursing home (The Sentara Nursing Home) were affected with wind damage. Other areas affected by the tornado was found in areas around Tide Mill Lane, Burton Street and Patrician Drive.
  • Damages from the tornado were estimated to be $7,715,260.
  • President Clinton provided a Federal Declaration for Individual Assistance and Hazard Mitigation on Monday, September 6, 1999.
