This set of images depict the effect a hurricane's forward speed has on potential surge. This storm is a Category 2 storm traveling at 20 and 30 mph.
Category 2 NNE Track @ 20mph.
Category 2 NNE Track @ 40mph.
Notice how the increased speed of the storm increases the potential flooding. As a hurricane moves forward faster, the ability of the water to spread away from it is diminished. When a hurricane passes over the continental shelf , the water rises higher as there are no deep water currents to allow it to flow away. The speed of the storm has a significant effect on the potential surge. |
