TimelineHampton, Virginia is a community that is very rich in history. Its origin dates back to 1610. During the Civil War the City was burned by its own troops rather than surrender to Federalist troops in 1861. Prior to the fire, Hampton had 30 businesses and over 100 homes. Fewer than six buildings remained intact after the fire. In 1884 fire again besieged Hampton and almost completely destroyed the downtown business district. This devastating fire resulted in the Hampton Fire Division being formed.

Today Hampton is a thriving city of over 146,000 residents. It occupies 55 square miles on the Virginia Peninsula in the Hampton Roads Region. Major industries are seafood processing, military, NASA, and tourism. Two interstate highways, I-64 and I-664, serve the area. The Division is committed to meeting the service needs of Hampton's citizens, and we are working hard to make Hampton the most livable city in Virginia.
