- Don't panic! If you exert yourself, you will breathe faster and take in more smoke/toxic gases that can burn your lungs or knock you unconscious.
- Feel the door from top to bottom. If it is hot or warm, stuff clothing/towels at the bottom of the door to keep out smoke and gases.
- Open the window.
- Escape through an open window only if there is an easy way to the ground and smoke or flames are not rising from a lower floor. If you can't get safely out the window, wait at the window and signal for help with a light-colored cloth or a flashlight. If there's a phone in the room, call the Fire Department (911) and tell them exactly where you are.
