Hampton's Broad Vision For Fort Monroe:
Fort Monroe And Beyond

Fort Monroe is currently an active base, and serves as the Headquarters for TRADOC. The base will close in 2011, which will open a new chapter in the history of this historic property as well as for the City of Hampton. The "next life" for Fort Monroe will present many unique opportunities and challenges. In many respects, Fort Monroe will become a new neighborhood or district that will be closely tied to every aspect of our community.

Fort Monroe is located within the city limits of Hampton. As the "host" community for the new Fort Monroe, it is clear that the City of Hampton plays a unique role. The City, therefore, will strive to "stitch" the new Fort Monroe into the physical, economic, civic, social, and cultural fabrics of our community. For example, decisions regarding the reuse of Fort Monroe will have to be analyzed and integrated into City streets and roads, utilities, public safety, schools, parks and recreation programs and facilities.

Our broad vision for Fort Monroe will be guided by these principles:

  1. Evaluate decisions and provide guidance and input to the FMFADA within the context of the Hampton Community Plan with particular attention to the Phoebus Master Plan and the Buckroe Master Plan.
  2. Work to open up the Fort for the enjoyment of the community as soon as practical.
  3. Protect, showcase and promote the history.
  4. Achieve economic sustainability.
