Innovations Recognition

In 2004 the city's Youth Civic Engagement initiative was a finalist of the Innovations in American Government award by the Ash Institute and Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. Out of over 1,000 applicants in this prestigious annual award, Hampton was one of 15 chosen for recognition.

"This program was selected as a finalist because it truly harnesses the power of our youth," said a Harvard University spokesperson. "Giving these young people a stake in their communities not only makes the communities stronger, it prepares youth to assume the reins as leaders in government. This program is one of a kind. It helps create a city that works for youth by involving them in process - from the ground up. The Youth Civic Engagement program is a national model that is exciting, successful and easy to replicate."
