Assets in Hampton Assets in Hampton

The Survey of Resources and Assets from Search Institute was conducted with Hampton youth in 1999 and 2003 to measure how many of the 40 Developmental Assets® our community's youth believe they have. This comprehensive survey, based on young people's perception, presents a snapshot of how well we were providing, and assisting youth to acquire, these assets.

The Survey of Resources and Assets presents results on average scores of Developmental Assets and young people's perception of the supports available to them in the community. In addition, it includes information on the Five Fundamental Resources for youth based on America's Promise.

The results of the Hampton survey show that our young people report having 18 assets. The national average is 19.

An average number of assets isn't good enough! The Coalition for Youth believes that it's important for every young person to have the opportunity to become a capable, caring productive citizen.

To address this concern, Hampton's Mobilization for Youth was created. Through this mobilization, staff and a volunteers work to spread the word about developmental assets. To date, over 2,000 adults have been trained in the assets framework and over 100 organizations, schools, businesses and places of worship are involved in asset building.
