THE MISSING CONNECTION

Across America, kids are growing up without the vital connection with wise elders. Dr. Urie Bronfrenbrenner states the need for this connection passionately when he says, "Every young person in America should have at least six adults in their life who are absolutely crazy about that kid." They show up at soccer games. They remember birthdays. They are present for important rites of passage, and by being there they become a significant voice, guide, and advocate for that young person.

These significant adults, whether they are grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, coaches, or family friends, are there to help the parent and to provide guidance when needed. In many cultures of the past, the role of this trusted adult or wise elder was highly revered, and their presence considered essential if the community was to thrive. But according to an attitudes and behaviors survey conducted by the Search Institute, which has surveyed more than one million twelve-to-eighteen-year-olds, the number of significant, trusted adults the average American child in that age group has outside of their parents is less than one!
