Hampton's Youth Engagement is based on a pyramid of opportunities. Each pathway provides a meaningful way for young people to impact their school, neighborhood, and community.
- Service Pathway
- Short-term, meaningful, volunteer opportunities are a great way to introduce civic engagement to a broad range of youth.
- Influence Pathway
- With more training, time, and commitment, young people can participate in a variety of advisory roles and/or give their input through focus groups and speakouts.
- Shared Leadership Pathway
- Young people take on leadership and decision-making roles with adults. They award grants and serve as full voting members on boards and commissions. Two teens are employed as city planners in the Planning Department to ensure that the youth voice is represented in the Hampton Community Plan.
City-wide projects tackle youth concerns and promote youth activism.
Current opportunities range from a club that plans teen activities to serving on the Superintendent's Advisory Group.
