He was a genuine triple-threat - in sports, in community affairs, and even in the political area. "Bird" was Peninsula's "Man of the Year in Sports" (1963), and honored as "Outstanding Citizen" in 1984, and in between served on Newport News City Council. Fullback on the Newport News High School state championship team (1925); quarterback-captain of state championship team at Virginia Tech (1930), and as first baseman led Tech to Southern Conference Baseball Crown (1931).
