Chris Slade was an all-state defensive end for Tabb's football team, which won the 1987 Group AA state championship. He also played basketball for the school, and when he graduated in 1989, he had scored more than 1,000 points and grabbed more than 1,000 rebounds in his four-year career. Slade went on to the University of Virginia, where he set records for sacks in a single season with 15 and in a career with 40. He was named national defensive player of the year in 1992. He was drafted in the second round by the New England Patriots and played seven years with the Patriots and one more with the Carolina Panthers.
