Dr. James Morgan Griffin 1992 Hall of Fame Inductee Dr. James Morgan Griffin, know as "Little Train," was an outstanding athlete at Hampton Institute. He was an All-CIAA football player and a member of the record-setting mile relay team in the Penn Relays. Dr. Griffin, a native of Cape May, New Jersey, was also an accomplished gymnast. A 1940 graduate from HI, Griffin coached the football team in 1940 and 1941. After his military career, he returned to HI as its football coach, where his 1941 (8-1-1) team landed a spot in the Orange Blossom Classic in Florida. They lost to Florida A&M 7-0. Griffin also coached the track and field teams at HI. Being a community activist, he was an eight year member of the Hampton School Board. |
