In 1947, the veteran golfer became the first Virginian to win the U.S. Open, later becoming a member of the U.S. Ryder Cup Team. He won the U.S. Open by defeating the legendary Sam Snead with a 282 score, firing a round of 69 on the last day. He won the Tam O'Shanter World Championship in 1953 where his eagle shot on the last hole was heard around the world, and won or tied 10 times while on the PGA Tour (1946-1955). The former Hampton High School golfer is also a member of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame of the American Golfers Hall of Fame.
