His tireless effort and commitment to perfect as head coach of football at Hampton High School during the past 26 years is exemplified in his overall record of 271 wins, 41 losses and 2 ties- the Best in Virginia’s history in high school football. His teams at Hampton High School have won 21 Peninsula District titles, 12 Eastern Region Championships and 9 State Championships Smith’s 1996 team of 14-0 was ranked number 1 in the country by numerous High School football polls. Named Coach of the Year several times on both the district and state levels. He was voted “National Coach of the Year” for the 1995 Season by the National High School coaches association. He is a member of the Virginia High School Hall of Fame.
