1999 Hall of Fame Inductee

Shaun L. Gayle, All-American running back and defensive back at Bethel High School in Hampton had an outstanding career as a free safety at Ohio State and the National Football League. He led the Ohio State Buckeyes secondary in tackles; passes defended and forced fumbles as a senior. Gayle began his 11-year career in the NFL as a 10 round draft pick with the Chicago Bears in 1984 as a free safety and became the starter in 1988. Two years later he shifted to strong safety. He played in the Super Bowl and was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1991. Gayle finished his career with San Diego.
