His skill and inspiration led every Huntington High School team he coached to winning seasons. His football teams won 26 Virginia Inter-scholastic Association Championships from 1943-1970 and once went unbeaten for 32 games. His track teams won 103 meets, losing only 6 and his basketball teams compiled a 112-13 record.

Many college and pro teams have been studded with products of Madden's coaching skills.
