Wynsol Spencer, who graduated from Newport News High School in 1937, was the dominant amateur golfer on the Peninsula and in Virginia. He won the Virginia State Amateur title five times. Spencer also won the Peninsula Amateur title 11 times and placed second twice. He was one of the top golfers in the United States in the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. He qualified for the National PGA in 1965, missing the last two rounds by one shot. Spencer's proudest moments came in the 1951 North-South Amateur, in which he tied for first in Regulations Play but lost in the playoffs. Spencer who has made 28 holes-in-one in his long career, is a member of the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.
