Hampton Offers Free Tax Return Preparation
For Residents And City Employees


Hampton residents, city employees and public school staff can have their Virginia state income tax returns prepared for free at the Hampton Commissioner of the Revenue's office. They can also get their federal and state income tax returns electronically filed for free.

For free preparation, customers must bring their completed federal income tax return, including all attached schedules and W-2s and 1099s. For direct deposit of any refund you may receive, you must provide the bank routing and account number.

To have federal and state tax returns electronically filed for free, customers must bring two forms of ID (one must be a picture ID), in addition to attached schedules and W-2s and 1099s. There are some restrictions to the type of tax returns that qualify.

The Commissioner of the Revenue's office is located on the first floor of the Ruppert Sargent Building, 1 Franklin Street. Office hours are 9:00AM - 4:00PM, Monday - Friday.
