Applications Being Accepted
for 2011 Unity Awards Program
The Hampton Citizens' Unity Commission is seeking applications for its 2011 Unity Awards Program. This program recognizes individuals, initiatives, organizations and businesses that have had a positive impact on racial and cultural diversity in the City of Hampton.
Nominations are judged on whether they achieve one or more of the following objectives:
- Has modeled behavior or demonstrated commitment to fostering healthy racial and cultural relations
- Advanced awareness of diversity issues and concerns
- Participated in fostering dialogue among diverse cultural groups or ongoing diversity efforts
- Worked to dispel myths and misperceptions about diversity issues
- Demonstrated a commitment to cultural diversity through community involvement
Past award recipients include Mix Magazine, Thomas Nelson Community College President Dr. Alvin Schexnider, Hampton YMCA, WHRO program "Another View" and Ellen Shackelford, member of the Mayor's Committee for People with Disabilities.
Applications for nominees can be found at www.hampton.gov/unity and must be received no later than Friday, April 1, 2011. Awardees will be recognized at a reception to be held on Thursday, May 12 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM at The American Theatre, 125 East Mellen Street, Hampton.
