Completed in 1834 and named for President James Monroe, a Virginia native, Fort Monroe is the largest stone fort ever built in the United States. During the Civil War, the Union-held fortification earned the nickname of "Freedom's Fortress" when it became a place of refuge for escaping slaves. The fort was most recently distinguished as America's newest addition to the National Park System. After nearly 180 years as an active army base, the moat-encircled stone fort was proclaimed Fort Monroe National Monument by President Barack Obama on November 1, 2011.
