Hampton Fire Division Offers Free Training
For citizens who wish to serve Hampton as volunteer firefighters and emergency medical technicians, the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue offers valuable training – at no charge to those who qualify.
Firefighting: While the next Firefighter I & II class is not yet scheduled, two agility tests – a class pre-qualification – are set for Saturday, February 26 and Saturday, March 5. Applicants must complete the course in 5 minutes and 17 seconds to qualify. Doctor’s release and applicant waiver forms for the agility tests can be obtained from Hampton Fire and Rescue by emailing ccopper@hampton.gov.
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Class: The next EMT class has a tentative start date of Saturday, April 2 and runs through June 11. Successful candidates will receive 160 hours of training in anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, hazmat awareness, blood-born pathogens, incident command, and more. CPR is a pre-requisite for this class.
Applicants must pass a background check. Additionally, Hampton Fire asks those who take advantage of the City’s free training for a commitment of 24 volunteer hours a month for two years (minus credit for class time).
The deadline to request an EMT class application or sign up for an agility test is February 18. To apply, email ccopper@hampton.gov and specify either EMT or firefighter interest.
