The Hampton Crime & Grime Initiative is an aggressive campaign against blighted and repetitive drug properties. It was established to send the message that Hampton has a "No Tolerance" attitude when it comes to Crime and Grime. In order to achieve this shared goal of safe, clean, and livable neighborhoods, we are strategically organizing our resources of city staff, laws, funding, and neighborhood leaders, to establish healthier neighborhoods in Hampton. Under the Crime & Grime Initiative, each neighborhood district has two primary teams: a Patrol Team and a Strategy Team.

The purpose of the Crime & Grime Patrol Teams is to increase communication and coordination between city staff and residents as we try to improve the safety and appearance of the neighborhood. Each team is comprised of neighborhood leaders, concerned residents, and city staff (Codes & Compliance, Police, and Neighborhood Office). The Patrol Teams perform patrols of the neighborhood to identify concerns and observe improvements.

The Strategy Teams are comprised of neighborhood leaders, Neighborhood Commissioners, the City Manager´s Office, Neighborhood Office, Police, Codes Compliance, and Patrol Team members. The purpose of the Strategy Teams is to monitor the progress of Patrol Team and district. The team also reviews crime and grime trends in the district and identifies:

• Targeted zones that have a high incidence of code violations and criminal offences so that Crime and Grime Patrol Teams can focus their efforts;
• Problem properties that require specialized remedial actions such as acquisition, demolition or an appropriate court action; and,
• Issues that need to be referred to the appropriate city department or agency for action.

We encourage you, as a resident or business owner, to continue to do your part at improving our neighborhoods by:

• Getting involved in a Crime & Grime Patrol or Strategy Team.
• Maintaining your property to a high standard.
• Getting to know your neighbors.
• Reporting codes violations to 3-1-1 (can be reported anonymously).
• Reporting suspicious criminal activity to 727-6111 (can be reported anonymously).
