DESCRIPTION:
If you are looking for a quiet life by the Hampton Roads Harbor, Merrimac Shores may just be what you have been dreaming of. This established neighborhood is home to Hampton's exclusive Chesapeake Avenue where residents can look across the water at historic Fort Monroe, watch the twinkling lights on the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel and see the ships pull away from the piers at the Norfolk Naval Base. Maybe it is this view or perhaps its proximity to downtown that has made this waterfront neighborhood so popular. Its just five minutes from downtown, Interstate 64, and the bridge-tunnel to Norfolk, making the rush hour commute to the Norfolk Naval Base about 30 minutes. Its popularity could also be the Norman Rockwell-style houses and streets lined with billowing trees that are older than most of the houses, the neighborhood looks and feels like home.

HIGHLIGHTS:
No cookie-cutter houses here. Instead, the streets are lined with Cape Cods, Tudors, Victorians, colonials and even contemporary dwellings. Some have impressive columns and large picture windows. Others feature wraparound decks and porch swings. Many of the waterfront properties have private docks. Merrimac Shores also has a marina. And the Merrimac Shores homeowners association maintains a park with tennis courts and a playground overlooking the harbor. In this neighborhood you have the feeling of living by the ocean without the cost.

HISTORY:
This neighborhood was named in honor of the Confederate Ironclad that engaged the Union fleet on March 8, 1862 and on the following day, the Union Ironclad the Monitor in the waters adjoining Merrimac Shores. All of the streets are named in honor of the officers and the designers of the Merrimac. Merrimac Shores is part of a 100-acre tract of land first patented by Elizabeth Hawthorne on September 20, 1624. Merrimac Shores as it is today began development in 1946 with the first home built on Chesapeake Avenue in 1949. The Civic Association was chartered in 1954.
