HISTORY: Olde Wythe is rich in history dating back several hundred years with many historical events and sites. First Church of Kecoughtan was built here in 1616. Several Roads in the neighborhood are named after famous Indians such as Powhatan Parkway, Pocahontas and Pochin Place. Pocahontas was Powhatan's daughter and Pochin was his son. Pochin was chief of the Kicotahn (Kecoughtan) Indians where Captain Newport's men stopped in April of 1607 before proceeding up the river to Jamestown. The oldest house in Olde Wythe is also the oldest inhabited house in the city and dates back to 1849. Clash of the Ironclads, the first battle of the Monitor and the Merrimac in 1862 occurred approximately 1 mile offshore. In 1893, the first golf course in Virginia was built adjacent to Kecoughtan and Hampton. WHAT THE NEIGHBORS HAVE TO SAY: "Our home was built in 1911... in just a few years we'll be able to throw our house a big birthday party! Any excuse to have fun in Olde Wythe. Closest thing to living in a small town you will find in Hampton Roads. Our neighbors are like family & everyone is your friend." Staci Carwile "I think of Wythe as the planned community that it took 100 years to plan. The diversity of architecture and the mature landscaping really sets our neighborhood apart from modern subdivisions and gives it a character that can't be duplicated in a new home community."
