Phoebus is experiencing a renaissance and features a nice mix of older homes, antique shops, arts and crafts galleries, and restaurants. The restored American Theater at 125 East Mellon Street has quickly become one of the premier performance venues in Hampton Roads. HIGHLIGHTS: In partnership with the City of Hampton, Phoebus is preserving the historic downtown while adding restaurants and antique or specialty shops to its roster of established local businesses. There is a new waterfront condominium construction project underway and added to this mix is the recent announcement that the historic Chamberlin Hotel will once again be a vibrant community anchor... thus you can understand why we call Phoebus, Hampton's hidden treasure. HISTORY: The waterfront community of Phoebus has a rich history dating back to the early 1600's. Located near Fort Monroe, the area grew following the Civil War to become the home of veteran soldiers, freed slaves, and new businessmen. Incorporated in 1900, the town was named for its most prominent citizen - Harrison Phoebus. Although Phoebus merged with the City of Hampton in 1952, it still retains much of its small town charm.
