Linda Duggan Curtis
Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Hampton
Linda Duggan Curtis was born and raised in Bridgewater, NJ. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications from the University of Miami (Fla.) in 1974 and a Juris Doctor degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in 1978. She is married to Dr. W. R. Scott Curtis, Jr., an OB-GYN physician who practices in Hampton. Mrs. Curtis began her career as a prosecutor during law school, when she interned with the Hampton Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. She became an Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney in Virginia Beach in 1978, where she specialized in the prosecution of major offenses, such as rape, robbery, and homicide, and the prosecution of career criminals. In 1981, she joined Victims' Assistance Legal Organization (VALOR) as its Associate Executive Director. VALOR is dedicated to promoting the rights of crime victims in both the civil and criminal courts. She returned to prosecution in 1982, when she became Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney in Hampton. She served as Chief Deputy for 10 years before being appointed Commonwealth's Attorney in September 1995, when her predecessor became a judge. She was elected to that position in a special election in 1996 and re-elected in 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2009. Linda Curtis is on the Board of Directors of the Virginia Association of Commonwealth's Attorneys, and was the first woman to be elected President of that Association. She serves on the Virginia Criminal Sentencing Commission, the Board of Governors of the Criminal Law Section for the Virginia State Bar, and served as co-chair of the Virginia Criminal Justice Conference. Ms. Curtis also serves on the Domestic Violence Advisory Committee of the Judicial Council of Virginia. She is also a past President of the Virginia Network for Victims and Witnesses, Inc., a statewide organization dedicated to the concerns of crime victims. From 1995 to 1997, she was a member of the Department of Criminal Justice Services Victims' Rights Implementation Committee, and has spoken at numerous DCJS conferences on victim/witness issues, domestic violence, and hate crimes. Here in Hampton, Mrs. Curtis is a member and past president of the Board of Directors of Alternatives, Inc., an agency which promotes healthy development of our youth. She is past President of the Board of Directors of Transitions Family Violence Services, which provides comprehensive services, including shelter, to families involved in domestic violence, and has served on the boards of the Y. H. Thomas Community Center in Old Northhampton and the Kenneth Wallace Community Resource Center. She is a founding member of the Hampton Family Violence Prevention Council. Since becoming Commonwealth's Attorney in 1995, Linda Curtis has implemented a Kids Court program for child victims and witnesses to acclimate them to the court process and helped to organize the Courtwatch organization, providing interested members and the public with training in the operation of Hampton's courts. She is also a member of the Hampton Drug Court planning team. In her spare time, she enjoys her cats and grandchildren (not necessarily in that order), reading, gardening, trying to figure out how to get the computer to work, snow skiing, and tap dancing. |
