Electrical Permit Processes:   OWNER   CONTRACTOR


 OWNER
  1. Sign Owner's Affidavit
  2. If plans are required, they must be approved. Check for asbestos. Certification may be required.
  3. Verify Building Permit Issuance if required
  4. Scope of Work
    • Site Lighting
      • Write Building Permit for poles and Electrical Permit for conduit.
      • Engineered footing details and wind load calculations required for poles 14 feet or higher.
    • Temporary Pole
    • New Service or Increase of Service (fee includes all other electrical work to be done)
    • All Other: Outlets, Fixed Appliances, Pools, Pumps, Add-ons to existing service.
  5. Write Electrical Permit.
  6. Calculate Fee.
  7. Sign Redlines.
  8. Deliver Plans
  9. ISSUE PERMIT

 CONTRACTOR
  1. Check for current Master Card.
    1. Under $1,000 value - Local Business License Requirement.
    2. Between $1,001 and $7,500 value - Local Business License and Class "C" registered.
    3. Between $7,501 and $70,000 value - Local Business License and Class "B" registered.
    4. Over $70,000 value - Local Business License and Class "A" registered.
    Note: If value is $25,000 or more, out of town contractor must have a City of Hampton business license.

        2. Verify E&S Inspection Approval
        3. Check for Zoning Code compliance: (lot size, house size, distance to property lines).
        4. Check for issuance of Re-Zonings, Variances, Conditional Privileges, etc.
        5. Check to see if property is in Chesapeake Bay Preservation District. If so, has the committee approved?
        6. Check Flood Zone.
        7. Check if Engineered Footings required or Footing Verification for 2nd story.
        8. Check for Architectural Review if required.
      2. Commercial
        1. Verify HRSD and Sewer Payments.
        2. Verify Site Plan and Landscape Plan Approval.
        3. Verify Issuance of Land Disturbing Permit, Right of Way Permit, and Site Plumbing Permit.
        4. Check for any Re-Zonings, Variances, Conditional Privileges, Use Permits, IDA approval, etc.
    • Demolition
      1. Utility Disconnect letters required.
      2. If Commercial, check for Asbestos Certification and/or Clean Air Statement.
    • Mobile Homes
      1. Check for Zoning and Chesapeake Bay requirements
      2. Issue Electrical, Plumbing, and Mechanical Permits, as package with Building Permits.
    • Signs
      1. Check for IDA approval if in required area.
      2. Check for full compliance with sign ordinance.
      3. If sign pole and over 14' high, engineered footing details and wind load computations required.

        1. Flame Retardant Certification Required.
