About Us -> About the Units -> Sex Crimes, Child Abuse, Cold Case Homicide Squad

The Sex Crimes Squad is supervised by one (1) Sergeant and five (5) detectives assigned to this squad. The Sex Crimes Squad is primarily responsible for investigating complaints of sexual assaults, rapes, sex related criminal acts, child abuse, child neglect, child endangerment, and cold case homicides. This squad is broken up into two basic units; sex crimes/child related crimes and cold case homicides.

The sex crimes unit is responsible for investigating any case that involves a sexual component. Examples of these types of crimes are: Rape, Indecent Liberties with minors, Sodomy, Forcible Sodomy, Object Penetration, Peeping Toms, and Indecent Exposures. These detectives are also responsible for investigating crimes committed against our smallest citizens…our children.

Detectives from the Sex Crimes Unit work closely with outside agencies such as Child Protective Services and the Department of Social Services to ensure that not only are the criminal aspects of crimes involving children are address, but also to ensure their follow up care, when needed. In addition to these agencies, the Sex Crimes Unit also works closely with surrounding jurisdictions, state and federal agencies to ensure that suspects that prey upon our citizens are identified, apprehended, and prosecuted to the fullest extent possible under the law.

This Unit also has a second element assigned to investigate cold case homicides. These detectives review old case files, re-interview witnesses, re-examine physical evidence and re-submit evidence for additional scientific testing. A homicide can never be inactivated. Advances in science have provided greater possibilities in suspect identification, apprehension and prosecution. To this end, these detectives work diligently to speak for victims who no longer can speak for themselves.

Although there are numerous types of crimes that the Sex Crimes Squad investigates, there simply is not enough space to innumerate each of the crimes separately. However, if you are interested in reviewing a specific crime, please refer to the following link to the Code of Virginia Searchable Database: http://leg1.state.va.us/000/src.htm. Simply type in the topic you wish to explore and search engine should do the rest for you.
