About Us -> About the Units -> Investigative Services Branch

The investigative arm of the Hampton Police Division falls within the purview of the Investigative Services Branch. Investigative Services is broken down into three distinct units: Property Crimes Unit (PCU), Crimes Against Persons (CAP) and Special Investigations Unit (SIU). Cases are assigned to each unit for investigation based on the nature of the investigation.

Cases where property is the object of the crime are assigned to Property Unit. Although there are countless crimes whereby property is the object of the crime, examples of this would be: burglary, auto theft, and white collar crimes.

Cases that involve people as the object of the crime fall under the auspice of the CAP Unit. Like with property crimes, there are numerous felonious crimes that are committed against the citizens of the City of Hampton; some examples include: Homicide, Maiming, Rape, Robbery, and Abduction.

Illegal narcotics and vice related crimes plague not only our community, but the country as a whole. As a result, all other crimes that are not investigated by Property or CAP are investigated by the men and women of SIU. Examples of the types of crimes that they investigate are: drug related offenses, prostitution, illegal alcohol sales, and other quality of life issues which are not generally investigated by Property and CAP.

Investigative Services Branch is commanded by one (1) Major. Three (3) Lieutenants command CAP, Property and SIU respectively. There are also eight (8) Sergeants assigned to this branch. Investigative Services has forty-two (42) Detective Corporals assigned to investigate cases, with an additional nineteen (19) Patrol Investigators assigned to assist with various investigative efforts. There are ten (10) civilian employees assigned to the Crime Scene Unit as Forensic Technicians, and an additional six (6) civilians in support services roles for Investigative Services.

Each member of the Investigative Services Branch is charged with ensuring that each and every case that is assigned is thoroughly and professionally investigated without bias or prejudice. The search for the truth is the underpinning of cases that members of Investigative Services are tasked with investigating; this done with the utmost consideration for the needs of the victim.
