About Us -> About the Units -> Violent Crimes Squad

The Violent Crimes Squad is supervised by one (1) Sergeant and four (4) detectives assigned to this squad. The Violent Crimes Squad is primarily responsible for investigating complaints of violent felonies, abductions, weapons law violations, bomb threats, domestic violence, and runaways that occur within the City of Hampton.

The detectives assigned to this squad are primarily responsible for investigating all violent felonies. Examples of this would be maimings, shootings into occupied buildings, and most offenses that involve the use of some type of weapon (robbery not withstanding).

There is also a detective assigned to investigate and follow up on runaways and missing people. During 2006, the Violent Crimes Squad investigated 51 missing persons complaints, 485 reported runaways and 1198 domestic violence reports. All cases were reviewed to ensure that the appropriate investigative efforts are followed.

The Hampton Police Division has recently joined forces with the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) to begin a Violent Crimes Task Force. This task force is designed to identify the most violent offenders in the City of Hampton and determine if their criminality warrants federal adoption for prosecution. The aim of this task force is to ensure that violent criminals face the maximum amount of time in a correctional facility that is allowable by law for their crimes. This, in turn, keeps them off of our streets longer.

Although there are numerous types of crimes that the Violent Crimes Squad investigates, there simply is not enough space to innumerate each of the crimes separately. However, if you are interested in reviewing a specific crime, please refer to the following link to the Code of Virginia Searchable Database: http://leg1.state.va.us/000/src.htm. Simply type in the topic you wish to explore and search engine should do the rest for you.

The members of the Violent Crimes Squad pride themselves on the thorough investigations that they conduct. They are a dedicated group of investigators who work diligently to ensure that the City's more dangerous and violent criminals are quickly identified, apprehended and prosecuted for violent crimes.
