School Resource Officers meet with every Senior Level high school student the week of the Prom and lecture on subjects such as underage drinking, drunk driving, narcotic usage and how arrests would impact on insurance rates, family, college, employment, etc. Expert speakers and films are also included in the presentation. Hampton Police Officers monitor and patrol designated drug free after-prom party locations to minimize the expense of security and encourage drug free parties. At the same time, motels and other discreet locations are patrolled to discourage irresponsible drinking and assured consequences.
Mission
- To eliminate incidents and accidents associated with underage drinking and illegal drug use during proms and after-prom parties.
- To increase visibility of uniformed officers on Prom Night.
- To provide information to students to make them aware of the dangers and consequences associated with illegal drinking and drug use.
- To provide visible reminders city-wide to make the community aware of the Division's involvement with Prom related activities.
Presentations are made by the Division's School Resource Officers to Juniors and Seniors on the day just prior to the school's prom. In addition to the above mentioned topics use and lose laws, insurance and civil laws, laws relating to hotel/motel registration, the Division's Life Force Program, and real life experiences relating to drunk driving fatalities are also covered. Other reminders include a mock accident scene involving two heavily damaged vehicles located at a heavily traveled intersection, as well as a large banner suspended from a pedestrian bridge over a major roadway. Operation Prom Officers also make appearances at the Prom, in Uniform, to interact with students in show of the Division's support.
