The Hampton Police Division's Safety Road check Program is designed to identify drunk and impaired drivers, impact drivers who do not properly maintain their vehicles or are operating them improperly or illegally, and to enforce seatbelt laws in a positive manner.

Mission

The Division regularly conducts three types of Road checks in the interest of public safety. Sobriety Checkpoints are designed to create the perception that drivers run an increased risk of coming into contact with the police if they drink and drive. The goal is to impact all motorists, specifically drunk and impaired drivers. Traffic Safety Checkpoints target drivers that do not maintain their vehicles properly or are operating them without an operator's license or vehicle registration. The Occupant Protection Checkpoint is designed to enforce seat belt laws in a positive manner. Motorists found to be wearing their seatbelts are rewarded with token items such as pens, Frisbees, and key chains as a thanks from the Division. Those found not wearing their seatbelts are reminded of the law and given a brochure on the benefits of wearing seatbelts. These road checks also provide increased police presence and interaction with the community, as well as deterring the criminal element that use the area for illegal activities. Safety road checks also often yield arrests for illegal drugs, weapons violations, outstanding warrants and Habitual Offenders.
