After selection as an Auxiliary Police Officer recruit, they are required to attend the Auxiliary Police Academy which consists of seven months of intensive training on evenings and on weekends. This will instill those basic skills needed to become a successful Auxiliary Police Officer. After the Auxiliary Police Academy, the recruit is then assigned to a Field Training Instructor who accompanies the recruit on patrol for a minimum period on each of the three shifts. Field Training Instructors evaluate every auxiliary recruit officer as they react to real world situations and determine when the Auxiliary Officer is ready to be released to their shift assignment.
The entry-level position requires a one-year period of probationary status prior to permanent appointment. Auxiliary Patrol Officers are required to volunteer 24 hours a month to maintain their status. Auxiliary Patrol Officers may be assigned to any of the three shifts within the Police Division. Auxiliary Patrol Officers are also required to meet the same minimum qualifications as Permanent Full Time Police Officers.
