Hampton Seeking Citizens to Serve on the Finance Committee

The Hampton City Council is seeking a volunteer Hampton citizen to fill the unexpired portion of a term on the Council's Finance Committee. The Committee is comprised of three citizen volunteers, two City Council members, the City Manager, and one Assistant City Manager or Senior Staff Person.

The purpose of this Committee is to enhance the Council's effectiveness in its role of setting financial policies, levying taxes, allocating revenues, and overseeing government operations with an eye toward encouraging efficiency and efficacy in program alignment with the various strategic plans. The Committee will accomplish this by developing a broad-scoped, strategic view of city financial operations and providing appropriate analysis and advice in support of the Council's decision-making processes.

Accordingly, the Committee's activities will include off-cycle budget analysis, review of financial and investment policies, tracking expenditures, tracking major projects and investments, monitoring key financial performance indicators, and developing multi-year income, expense and capital projections.

Members of this Committee should have one or more of the skills listed below:

  • Knowledge of general accounting principles, including private and/or government accounting
  • Ability to analyze financial and management problems
  • Understanding of record keeping
  • Ability to understand contracts
  • Understanding of government organizing and operating principles
  • Understanding of business principles
