Hampton Hosts CALEA Summer Conference
From July 29, 2009 to August 1, 2009, the Hampton Police Division will be hosting the CALEA Summer Conference at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. This agency, with support from the Conventions & Tourism Bureau, bid on the conference three years ago, and we were awarded the bid for the 2009 summer conference. This is a very prestigious opportunity for us to be able to show off our city and police division to other police agencies from across the country including Canada and Mexico. Approximately 600 people will attend this conference to include Chief's of Police, Sheriff's, and other city dignitaries.
Each year the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies holds three conferences in different parts of the country. Each conference lasts 4 days. Three of the four days are dedicated to training and meetings. Training topics are geared toward accreditation and police managers who would be attending the meetings. The fourth day is dedicated to reviewing the agency on-sites which have taken place in the four months prior to the conference. At this review, the report from the on-site is presented to the panel of CALEA Commissioners, and they have the opportunity to ask questions about the on-site, and about the agency. Once this is completed, the panel votes to accredit (reaccredit) the agency, or not to accredit (reaccredit) the agency. If accredited the agency is presented with its award at an awards banquet on Saturday evening.
Agencies scheduled to be reaccredited in Hampton include: Virginia Beach Police Department, Williamsburg Police Department, Honolulu, HI, Police Department, Kentucky State Police, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, St. Petersburg, FL, Police Department, Fulton County, GA Police Department and many more.
The Hampton Police Division has been accredited by CALEA since 1988 and we are proud to be the 60th agency in the country to become nationally accredited.
