Hampton Offers Free Deck Inspections

Spring is here and that means cookouts, deck parties, and all kinds of outdoor fun so don't ruin the party with a deck collapse. It is important to regularly inspect your decks and balconies for safety issues.

Not sure what to look for? In the month of May, Hampton's Codes Compliance Department is offering free deck inspections.

Each year hundreds of people are injured as a result of deck failures that may have been avoided by performing basic preventative maintenance. Whenever you build or repair a deck, it is important to obtain the required permits and inspections from your local building department to help ensure your family and guests safely enjoy your deck.

Top 5 Tips for Deck Safety:

  1. Check support posts and beams for rot, splitting, or abnormal movement.
  2. Closely check the attachment points between the deck and the house.
  3. Check all fasteners, bolts, and brackets for rust and corrosion.
  4. Check all guards and rails to be sure they are sturdy and well secured.
  5. Use grills, heaters, and outdoor fire pits with care and be sure to observe all rules regarding their use.

Still not sure if your deck is secure? Call 311 in Hampton or 727-8311 from a mobile phone to request an inspection from a Codes Compliance inspector and get your free deck check. Visit www.hampton.gov/codes for additional information on decks and other codes-related issues in Hampton.
