Hampton Fire Assistant Chief Receives
Professional Designation
Assistant Chief Jason Monk of the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue has received the professional designation of Chief Medical Officer (CMO). The Commission on Professional Credentialing met in late August to officially confer the designation upon him. Monk has become only one of 65 chief fire officers nationwide - with only eight in Virginia - to receive this prestigious designation.
The CMO Designation program is a voluntary program designed to recognize individuals who have demonstrated excellence and outstanding achievement throughout their career. CMO candidates are evaluated on seven components: experience, education, professional development, professional contributions, association membership, community involvement and technical competencies. The application process not only validates an individual's prior experience, but requires submission of a future professional development plan.
CMO candidate portfolios are evaluated by a team of peer reviewers appointed by the Commission on Professional Credentialing. The designation is valid for 3 years. Maintaining the designation of CMO requires currency in four areas: professional development, professional contributions, active association membership and community involvement.
Assistant Chief Monk has been with the Hampton Fire Division for 13 years and currently serves as the chief medical officer assigned to the operation section's EMS group. In addition to overseeing EMS services in Hampton, he serves as a tactical paramedic, supervisor for a regional strike team and participates in several regional and state committees for the betterment of fire and EMS practices.
