Buckroe Fishing Pier Is Scheduled To Open This Fall

March 18, 2008

Construction on the new Buckroe Beach fishing pier began March 14 in an effort to restore the previous pier destroyed by Hurricane Isabel in 2003.

The new pier, in the same location, will be owned and operated by the City of Hampton and will measure 709 feet in length and 16 feet wide upon completion. The "T" section at the end will be 70 feet wide and 29 feet long with lighting directed down on the pier and onto the water to attract fish. The restrooms, snack bar, and bait shop will encompass approximately 1,500 square feet on the pier. In addition, two stations for cleaning fish will be installed.

While the previous pier was constructed entirely of wood, the new fishing pier will be supported by concrete pilings and beams with a wood deck and railings which will offer more resistance to storms and hurricanes.

Construction of the pier; to include the pilings, decking, and railings; is scheduled for completion in fall 2008. The bait shop, snack bar, and permanent rest rooms may not be completed until the end of the year, in which case the City will provide temporary facilities until the permanent ones are ready for use.

The cost for rebuilding the pier, which includes the purchase of land for access to the pier, parking lot, and construction, is approximately $4.1 million.
