Hampton Celebrates Earth Day by Cleaning UpMay 2, 2008Hampton conducted its first ever Clean Your Files Day on April 23 to celebrate Earth Day. This inaugural event was available for city staff and provided everyone an opportunity to clean out their workspaces, create much needed storage space, and appropriately dispose of records past their retention lifetime. Approximately 50 city employees from 18 departments participated in the event. A Shred-IT truck shredded files and records in the employee parking lot at City Hall for more than two hours. Over two tons of paper and cardboard were disposed of during the event. All material was shredded on site and delivered to a paper mill and pulverized. The cost of the event was $350, amounting to less than 10 cents per pound of material shredded. "I thought the event was a huge success on several fronts," said Bruce Sturk, Director of Federal Facilities Support and participant in the event. "It shows the City is committed to our Go Green Hampton initiative and it's an excellent way to clean out old office files."
