Cynthia Hudson Selected As Hampton City AttorneyDecember 16, 2005Cynthia Hudson has been newly appointed to the position of City Attorney for the City of Hampton, effective upon the retirement of City Attorney A. Paul Burton on December 31.
As City Attorney, Hudson will provide legal counsel, advice, and guidance to the City Council, City Manager, and City departments; supervise a staff of professional, technical, and clerical personnel; study the agenda for City Council and attend work sessions and public Council meetings; and defend a wide variety of cases in Virginia State Courts and Federal Courts.
Hudson joined the City of Hampton as a deputy city attorney in June 1996. In this position, she provided counsel to the City Council, City Manager, and City departments; and was responsible for representing the City of Hampton and its employees in all phases of state and federal civil litigation; advising City agencies regarding general risk management matters with particular emphasis on employment law issues; representing City management in grievance proceedings; drafting legislation; and was assigned as special counsel to various city boards and committees. Prior to joining the City, Hudson was an attorney with McGuire, Woods, Battle, and Boothe of Richmond, and had previously served as the director of the Office of Policy and Personnel Programs with the Virginia Department of Personnel and Training in Richmond. She had also served as an adjunct faculty member at T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond. Hudson earned her law degree from the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mass Communications from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1987. |
