Hampton Seeking Citizens To Serve As Commissioners
On Hampton Redevelopment And Housing Authority

The Hampton City Council is seeking seven Hampton residents to serve as the Board of Commissioners of the Hampton Redevelopment and Housing Authority (HRHA). [Note that federal law requires that at least one Commissioner be a person who receives public assistance from the HRHA and interested recipients are encouraged to apply].

The HRHA provides affordable housing to low and moderate income people, housing service referrals, and opportunities for housing program participants to achieve self-sufficiency. HRHA also revitalizes and stabilizes existing residential and commercial areas of the city, and provides rehabilitation loans and grants to low to moderate income homeowners.

Board responsibilities include:

  • Setting policy governing the operation of the housing authority
  • Adopting the authority's operating budgets
  • Serving as the governing officers of a public-corporate entity that functions as developer and landlord of low-income housing programs
  • Ensuring that the authority operates within the law and according to HUD regulations

Desirable qualifications include:

  • Knowledge or expertise acquired through experience or formal education in one or more of the following areas/disciplines:
    • Banking, Finance, and/or Accounting
    • Business Management
    • Business Planning and Marketing
    • Community Development and Redevelopment
    • Real Estate
    • Social/Human Services
    • Legal
    • Housing Management and/or Development
    • Knowledge of Local Government; Board Governance; Policy Making and/or Strategic Planning

Desirable experience may have been gained in the following roles/areas:

  • Entrepreneurs (Owners/ Operators of Businesses)
  • Business Leaders
  • Civic Leaders
  • Educators
  • Faith Community Leadership
