Hampton Seeks Citizen Involvement
Hampton has numerous opportunities for citizens to contribute to their city, one of which is serving on various Hampton boards, commissions, and committees. Two such groups currently seeking new members are the Planning Commission and Finance Committee.
The Planning Commission is a seven-member body appointed by Hampton City Council. Its members are responsible for the review of long range plans, as well as land use and zoning matters for the city. Citizens who have the following qualifications or skill set are encouraged to apply:
- Demonstrated involvement in the community
- Graduate of the Neighborhood College (recommended)
- Previous service on another city board or commission (recommended)
- Expertise/professional background in one of the following areas:
- Land use law
- Environmental sciences
- Transportation
- Engineering
- Real estate/development/housing
- Finance & banking
- Facilities planning/management
- Geography
- Forecasting, modeling and demographics
- Social sciences such as youth and family development
The Finance Committee is a five-member body whose members provide City Council with a broad strategic view of city finances and advice in support of the Council’s decision-making processes. The activities of the committee include off-cycle budget analysis, review of financial and investment policies, tracking major projects and investments, monitoring key financial performance indicators, and developing multi-year income, expense and capital projections. Citizens with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply:
- Knowledge of corporate and/or governmental generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
- Ability to analyze financial and management problems
- Understanding of recordkeeping
- Understanding of government organizing and operating principles
- Understanding of business principles
