Hampton Seeks Citizen Involvement
on Wetlands Board & Hampton FADA
Hampton has numerous opportunities for citizens to contribute to their city, one of which is serving on various Hampton boards and committees. Two such groups currently seeking new members are the Wetlands Board and Hampton Federal Area Development Authority (FADA).
The Wetlands Board is a seven-member body appointed by Hampton City Council. Its members are responsible for investigating proposed and ongoing projects that may alter wetlands with the city. The board has the ability to prosecute violations and renew applications to use or develop wetlands. Citizens who have the following qualifications or skill set are encouraged to apply:
- Demonstrated involvement in the community
- Education and/or professional background in environmental and/or marine sciences with an emphasis in wetlands science, wetlands delineation, wetland habitats, etc.
- Background and/or professional experience in commercial and residential waterfront development, marina operation, pier and dock construction, and shoreline and coastal protection.
- Experience in environmental law and permitting
- Experience in environmental engineering and/or environmental planning.
- Successful completion of one or more Tidal Wetlands Workshops provide by the Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences
- Completion of Hampton's Neighborhood College (secondary qualification)
- Completion of at least one term on the Hampton Planning Commission and/or the Hampton Neighborhood Commission (secondary qualification)
The Hampton Federal Area Development Authority's objective is to enable more efficient cooperation with the federal government and to increase the value of federal installations in the City of Hampton by promoting the development of federal employee housing, office buildings and other infrastructure.
The goals of the Hampton FADA are to increase employment opportunities, strengthen the economic base and increase tax revenues.
Desirable qualifications include knowledge or expertise acquired through experience or formal education in one or more of the following areas/disciplines:
- Ability to work within a group of stakeholders on complex issues
- Ability to "think outside the box" and translate ideas to the FADA
- Assertive and proactive
- Community leadership
- Background in Federal activities
- Understands the Federal "cultures"
- Understanding of the real estate market and its impact on land use decisions
- Ability to study and evaluate the complex financial, environment and regulatory issues associated with federal facilities
- Close contacts with private industry & academia leadership
- Vested interest in building a strong relationship with the Federal Agencies
