Hampton Seeks Volunteer Firefighters
Hampton's Division of Fire & Rescue seeks 150 volunteers over the next three years to help fulfill the department's public safety mission. Volunteering with Hampton Fire & Rescue offers the satisfaction of helping others, membership in a 125-year tradition, and valuable job experience working alongside career and veteran volunteers. Free training is provided to those who qualify.
A six-month long Firefighter I & II training class is scheduled to begin October 26 and will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The training, which includes topics such as CPR, ropes and knots, blood-borne pathogens, search and rescue, and safety, prepares applicants for work in fire stations. Applicants must pass a physical agility test and a background check and agree to a time commitment to qualify for the class.
Two agility tests will be held prior to the training on September 18 and October 16 at 9 a.m. at Station #9, 1590 Briarfield Road. A doctor's release and an applicant waiver are required to participate. Agility test tips are included in the application.
Volunteer firefighter applications are due on Thursday, September 30. For more information, to make an appointment, or to obtain an application, interested citizens are asked to contact Hampton Volunteer Recruiter Cheryl Copper at 727-1223 or ccopper@hampton.gov.
