Attend the First Annual Hampton
Home and School Connection Conference

The First Annual Home and School Connection Conference is a FREE event for parents and their elementary school children and will be held Saturday, November 13 from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Hampton Roads Convention Center.

This event will serve as the kick-off for a week-long celebration of National Parental Involvement Day.   Parental Involvement is important because they are our children’s first teachers.  Research has shown that regardless of parents’ income and educational background, their involvement in education helps their kids do better in and out of school. In fact parental involvement is considered among the most important factors in a student’s success in school.

Conference Sessions Include:

  • "Homework: A Parent's Survival Guide," which will focus on helping busy parents structure their children's time and environment to improve homework performance.
  • "Building Strong Relationships with Teachers," will focus on ways for parents to initiate and maintain contact with their child's instructor during the school year, and effective ways to communicate outside the school day.
  • "Making Your Voice Count" is geared to parents who want to learn how to volunteer, become leaders and get involved with decision-making at their child's school.

To register or find out more, visit www.sbo.hampton.k12.va.us/getinvolved or call (757)727-2024.

Also as part of this important celebration, the City of Hampton is honored to be accepting America’s Promise’s prestigious national award, 100 Best Communities for Youth.  Hampton was named one of the nation’s 100 Best Communities for Youth because of several opportunities for young people to lead and help address the community’s most critical concerns.  Hampton’s youth are fully integrated in the policymaking process and have an opportunity to make an impact on City planning by serving on the Neighborhood Youth Advisory Board.  Youth members advise City leaders on issues affecting local young people some of their activities include meeting with decision makers and offering suggestions on budget priorities.
