Household Chemical Collection - November 21

Hampton Household Chemical Collection
Saturday, November 21, 9:00 A.M. - 3:00 P.M.
419 N. Armistead Avenue (Public Works Operations Complex)

The last household chemical collection of the season for Hampton residents will be held Saturday, November 21, from 9:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., at the Hampton Public Works Operations Complex, 419 N. Armistead Avenue (next door to the Armistead Avenue Animal Hospital). This collection will also include computers and other electronic equipment, this time only. The next household chemical collection will be held in March 2010.

Household chemicals are those products for cleaning and maintaining our homes and automobiles or for hobbies that have disposal restrictions because they are harmful to the environment. Read labels and look for words like "CAUTION, WARNING, HAZARDOUS, POISON, DANGER, DISPOSE OF IN SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, and DO NOT DISPOSE IN REGULAR TRASH", among others. If you have a question regarding the disposal of a material you possess, call Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority at 259-9850.

Residents can bring the following materials to this special collection:

  • Household Maintenance Chemicals: oil or latex paints, stains, solvents, glues, varnishes, adhesives, spray paint
  • Automotive Chemicals: gasoline or other fuels, waxes, oil & gas mixtures, brake fluid, engine cleaner, tar remover
  • Lawn & Garden Chemicals: insecticides, weed killers, pesticides, fertilizers, pest strips
  • Household Cleaning Chemicals: oven cleaners, drain cleaners, floor waxes, metal polishes, bleach, degreasers, septic tank cleaners, toilet cleaners, jewelry cleaners
  • Miscellaneous Chemicals & Materials: charcoal fluids, dyes, kerosene, swimming pool and photo finishing chemicals, nicad batteries, chemistry sets, fluorescent light bulbs
  • Special Collection for This Time Only: computers and other electronic equipment

Instructions for the collection:

  • Keep chemicals in original containers with labels intact if at all possible
  • Wrap leaking containers in newspaper and place in plastic bag - make sure all lids and caps are tight and use gloves and wash your hands thoroughly after packing leaking containers
  • Place items in boxes for transport - use newspaper or cardboard as fillers
  • Read labels - do not put chemicals that will react with one another in the same box!
  • Do not leave chemicals in trunk before collection - load them prior to leaving for the collection
  • Do not smoke near chemicals
  • Follow the directions of workers at the collection site
  • Stay in your vehicle unless you are asked to step out to open your trunk

Reduce your need for this special collection in the future:

  • Purchase alternative, non-toxic products
  • Use latex instead of oil paint
  • Share excess products with others

Special Safety Instructions:

  • Keep children and pets away from chemicals
  • Do not mix or pour chemicals together
  • Never pour chemicals down storm drains or on the ground!!! Chemicals disposed of in this way enter our waterways and damage fish and other wildlife and aquatic plants.
