Hampton residents have experienced nature's recent reminders that the weather can turn on us in a vicious way.
Taking a little time to pre-plan and be prepared can mean the difference between a safe, secure experience and having to deal with the loss and suffering that so many of our neighbors have had to contend with during recent severe storms.
This means that for one week, you can buy the things you need to ensure the health and safety of yourself and your family and not have to pay any sales tax on those items.
The state tells us that "a wide variety of emergency preparedness items priced at $60 or less (batteries, first-aid kits, bottled water, smoke detectors, etc.) will be exempt from tax. Portable generators, generator power cords, inverters and inverter power cables priced at $1,000 or less will also be exempt from tax."
In prior years, many major retailers also used this tax holiday to offer deep discounts on many items that are most necessary in preparing for hurricanes and flooding. Check the sales fliers in your local newspapers this weekend to see what kinds of deals are available.
As a reminder, it's also not a bad time to review the status of your flood insurance (remember, that this is separate from your homeowner's policy).

So, the bottom line is the bottom line. You need to prepare, and there will never be a cheaper time to do so.
